What Is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a state of mind, that is a thought-response to something happening in your life. It is one of the most common mental health problems. It affects around 1 in 20 people and there was over 5 million cases of anxiety in the UK last year. Although it is not known exactly what causes an anxiety disorder to start it is understood to be a combination of factors including stressful life experiences and personality type. As well as having to endure the horrible experience of severe anxiety or anxiety attacks, if you don't treat your anxiety you may suffer long term effects including self-loathing, social isolation, gastrointestinal disorders and a lowered immune system.Anxiety Symptoms
Although sufferers experience anxiety differently, you may display a variety of various psychological and physical symptoms, including: - Muscle tension - Light headedness - Dry mouth - Sweating & trembling - Hyperventilating - Nausea - Feeling worried - Fearing the worst - Feeling irritable - Difficult to concentrate
You might have had other encounters with anxiety besides these; everyone experiences anxiety in different ways.
Common Types of Anxiety:
Generalised anxiety disorder: Also known as (GAD), is characterised by overwhelming, persistent anxiety that prevents you from engaging in activities you enjoy. Panic attacks: Unpredictable panic attacks cause you to avoid situations out of concern for having more attacks. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): Unwanted thoughts and repetitive behaviours that interfere with your life. Phobias: Making tremendous efforts to avoid your fear of something. How We Can Help
